ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Rick Bogatay broke the school record in the mile and he and
Shawn Lindbom both hit automatic qualifying times in their respective events on Saturday at the New Mexico Classic in Albuquerque, N.M. Lindbom was competing in the 800 meter run. Seven total runners competed on Saturday, including five men and two women.
Bogatay finished in third place out of 51 runners in the mile, clocking in at 4:08.98, over a second faster than the previous record of 4:10.37 set by current teammate
Anthony Luna. His time converted to 4:03.44 for altitude, well under the automatic qualifying standard of 4:09.00 for the NCAA Division II Championships.
Nate Newland also hit a provisional time in the mile, finishing 10th in 4:17.02. The NCAA provisional standard is 4:13.70 and Newland's time converted to 4:11.48.
Brandon Johnson also competed in the mile, finishing 17th in 4:20.18. He was less than a second away from qualifying.
Lindbom placed fourth out of 33 runners in 1:52.20, converting to 1:51.57. That time was less than half a second under the automatic qualifying standard of 1:52.00.
Derek Fiorini also competed for the men in the 400 meters, finishing 15th out of 27 in 50.25. He is less than two seconds away from a provisional time.
For the women,
Xenia Flores set the school record in the 5000 meter run. She finished the race in 18:40.29, bettering her own previous school record of 19:03.10. She is 24 seconds away from a provisional mark.
Morgan Thomas put together a strong performance in the 800m, finishing 12th out of 39 runners in 2:19.06. Her converted time was two seconds off a provisional mark.
Metro State will be in action on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 12-13, at the Air Force Invitational.
