COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Both Metro State's men's and women's tennis teams were each picked third in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference preseason coaches polls released on Thursday. In addition, men's player
Scott Bradley was chosen as the RMAC Preseason Men's Player of the Year and teammate
Georgie Perez was a preseason All-RMAC selection.
The men's team capped one of its best seasons in school history last year with a 17-5 overall record and a perfect 8-0 record in the RMAC, capturing the regular season and tournament conference championships. The Roadrunners advanced to the round of 16 at the NCAA Tournament. Bradley, Perez and
Ryan Campbell were each named all-conference last season. However, Metro State must replace No. 1 singles player and 2009 RMAC Player of the Year Sascha Ruckelshausen, who graduated, and No. 2 singles player Angelo Faustino, who did not return to the team this season.
The men's team got off to an excellent start in 2009-10 with a 2-1 record in the fall. Bradley and Perez both reached the semifinals of the ITA Central Region singles championships and the duo captured the doubles championship and advanced to the ITA Small College Championships.
Metro State's women's team also had its best season in five years in 2009, reaching the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2004. The Roadrunners finished 14-15 overall and 4-4 in the RMAC, but put together four straight wins late in the season to catapult them to the RMAC Tournament title match and into the NCAA postseason. 2009 RMAC Freshman of the Year
Yerica Pessoa returns for her sophomore season.
This past fall, the women went 2-1.
Head coach
Beck Meares, the 2009 RMAC Men's Coach of the Year, will open the women's season at Air Force on Feb. 26 and the men's season on March 6 at Air Force.
